After an injection

Today you had an injection administered at the Rugpoli. On this page we provide important post-treatment information

Pain after diagnostic treatment ( just with a local anaesthetic)

The injection may cause the pain to worsen for a few days.

Pain after therapeutic treatment ( with corticosteroids)

Two different medicines are used in the injection. The first medicine, a local anaesthetic, works for a few hours. The second medicine, a corticosteroid, sometimes only kicks in after three to ten days. There can therefore be a short period after the local anaesthetic has worn off and before the effects of the corticosteroid kicks in, during which you actually feel more pain. After treatment with corticosteroid you do not need to take any anti-inflammatories such as Diclofenac, Ibuprofen or Arcoxia Naproxen. You can continue to take other medication.

Side effects

injection with corticosteroid:
Pain where the injection was made; this usually disappears after 2-3 days
Redness (head)
Headache
Increase in blood sugar levels
Cardiac palpitations
vaginal blood loss (temporary)
These side effects are bothersome but not dangerous. They will disappear after around 3 days.

General complications

Danger of infection

With any injection there is a danger of infection. This is why we deem sterility as vital. Materials are only used once. If necessary, we mix antibiotics in with the medicines for a few injections, in order to prevent infection.

Bleeding

An injection can cause topical bleeding. This is why the use of anticoagulants must be known to the medical practitioner. Your usage will be discussed with you prior to your treatment with your Rugpoli medical practitioner. Applicable anticoagulants: Coumarin based medication, Marcoumar, Sintrom, Plavix.

Over-sensitivity

Red blotches, itchiness: this is caused by over-sensitivity to one of the substances used in the injection. The reaction is temporary (2-5 days).

Allergic reaction

An allergic reaction to the administered medication can occur. It is very rare, but we have all the necessary equipment on hand at the Rugpoli clinics for such an emergency.

Driving your car

After an injection treatment you cannot drive your car. You must therefore arrange for someone to drive you home
